The US Navy’s Virginia-class submarine Arkansas (SSN 800) was launched into the James River at Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) yard.

The submarine was moved from a construction facility to a floating dry dock. It was then launched and towed to a submarine pier for final outfitting, testing, and crew certification.

Arkansas is the 27th Virginia-class submarine and the 13th to be delivered by NNS. It offers enhanced firepower, manoeuvrability, and stealth capabilities.

NNS Navy programmes vice president Bryan Caccavale said: “We are committed to increasing submarine construction cadence and throughput for the US Navy.

“Nuclear-powered submarines are critical to our national security and we’re proud to see Arkansas in the water.”

The six women from the Little Rock Nine, who were the first African American students to integrate the all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, are the ship’s sponsors.

In November 2022, the NNS division conducted a keel authentication ceremony for the Virginia-class submarine. This followed the completion of assembly of all hull sections for the vessel in September 2023.

In December 2024, the future USS Arkansas was christened at the same shipyard.

The Virginia-class, or VA-class/774-class, are nuclear-powered fast attack submarines used by the US Navy.

The vessels have speeds exceeding 25 knots while submerged and can operate underwater for up to three months without surfacing.

Designed for various open-ocean and coastal missions, they serve as a more cost-effective alternative to the Cold War-era Seawolf-class submarines. They are replacing the older Los Angeles-class submarines, of which 29 have already been decommissioned.

NNS stands as one of the two shipyards with the capability to design and construct nuclear-powered submarines for the US Navy.

It is manufacturing these Virginia-class vessels through a teaming agreement with General Dynamics Electric Boat.

HII partnered with C3 AI recently to enhance shipbuilding capabilities by integrating AI and expanding digital technology at its NNS and Ingalls Shipbuilding divisions.
